Classic Hunter

Deck Playstyle

The standard hunter recipe deck is one of the most synergistic decks in hearthstone that doesn’t use any expansion cards. The main idea of the deck is to use the synergy between your [Houndmaster], [Scavenging Hyena], [Tundra Rhino] with other beasts and spells such as [Kill Command], [Unleash the Hounds], [Snake Trap], while also taking advantage of playing [Eaglehorn Bow] with the solid amount of traps and using cheap spells to clear the board, generate board advantage or simply finish the game.

Requirements

  1. Reach Level 10 to unlock all of the Basic cards for this class.
  2. Deck doesn't require any cards from expansions
  3. Have 2840 Dust for crafting cards.

Card Explanations

Minions - 14 +

Leper Gnome × 2

  • Leper Gnome is one of the best aggressive 1 drops in the game. 2-1 for 1 with it’s deathrattle ability represents at least 2 damage to the opponent’s face, usually 4 or more. It helps you to build up an aggressive curve and finish the game before the opponent can do anything. Worst case scenario is having [Leper gnome] being killed by Shaman’s Earth Shock
Tip : as the secrets can only be activated on the opponent’s turn. Leper Gnome can help you to setup a kill versus a 1-2 hp mage with Doomsayer+Ice Block combo.

Scavenging Hyena × 2

  • Scavenging Hyena fits great in the heavy beast creature deck shell . It can be used to prevent early aggression as a 2 drop, still it’s main power is in the midgame. Due to hyena’s +2/+1 ability you can generate a huge advantage by using Scavenging Hyena + Unleash the Hounds combo turn 5 or later, or go for the lethal with Scavenging Hyena + Tundra Rhino combo while trading your beasts with the opponent’s creatures.

Bloodfen Raptor × 2

  • Bloodfen Raptor’s main benefits are : 1. It’s free to use, you receive it with all the starting cards 2. It’s a beast, that allows you to use all the benefits this deck provides you for playing beastsThis is the bad card when you compare it with Huge Toad which is also a Beast with the same stat and deathrattle effect. Only use it in case you are really short on budget. Best replacements are : King's Elekk, Ironbeak Owl, Haunted Creeper, Huge Toad, Knife Juggler, Mad Scientist.
Tip : In case you have no dust to spend and you are playing in meta full of aggro replace it with the other free card River Crocolisk

Dire Wolf Alpha × 1

  • Dire wolf alpha as × 1 in the deck, as it’s not the best drop on the empty board. You want to set up the board with minions before playing it.  It will gives great +1 attack buffs to the creatures on the sides and he’s a beast also. Good synergy with Snake Trap and Unleash the Hounds

Jungle Panther × 1

  • Jungle Panther is a 4-2 for 3 mana cost, while having a fragile body it also has stealth ability,  that can help you to deal with some big threats while not getting panther killed at the same turn you play it, also can be used for the lethal attack. It can also guarantee you a beast on the board for  synergy the next turn.

Houndmaster × 2

  • Houndmaster is an extremely powerful card. In the deck full of beasts it’s a 4-3 for 4, that offers you a +2\+2 taunt buff that can change the way the game is going. You may use it both as an aggressive play or in the defensive role.

Tundra Rhino × 1

  • Tundra Rhino is a solid card and can act as a pseudo taunt since it is a high priority removal for your opponent to deal with. If it survives the turn -  you are probably will be way ahead in the game. Turn 5 Tundra Rhino + Turn 6 Savannah Highmane follow up may end the game really quick. Good combo with all the beasts, but at 5 mana cost the opportunity to get good value out of it can be difficult which is why we only run 1 in this deck.

Savannah Highmane × 2

  • Savannah Highmane is one of the most powerful 6 drops in the game very hard for most class to remove with just 1 card so it will usually cost your opponent 2 cards to remove. It great stats, hard to deal with, great deathrattle plus it’s a beast. Buffed with the Houndmaster it can end the game on its own. Only real counters to it are Hex, Polymorph and Entomb.

Ragnaros the Firelord × 1

  • Powerful and the most expensive to craft (1600 dust) card, Great in control match ups. Deals 8 damage to a random enemy at the same turn you play it. Can bypass taunts with it’s ability. Bad against aggro due to its mana cost (8) and if the opponennt board is full of minions of targets it can hit.
Spells - 14 +

Hunter's Mark × 2

  • An excellent spell that allows you to trade your weak minions with the opponent's huge minions, helps to get rid of annoying taunts. Costs nothing (0),  good combo with Unleash the Hounds, Arcane Shot

Arcane Shot × 2

  • Arcane shot, 2 damage for 1 mana, it is used to stop early aggression, while generating the board advantage, also can be used to finish the opponent  by dealing damage to the face.

Explosive Trap × 1

  • Great trap. Can be used to stop early aggression. Works well with the Eaglehorn Bow.Tip : Be careful with this trap while playing vs Patron deck. It can generate a huge advantage for the opponent.Tip  : You may land this trap to prevent druid’s Force of Nature combo

Freezing Trap × 2

  • Excellent trap in the midrange, control matchups. Charges your Eaglehorn Bow. A bit weak vs aggro decks.

Snake Trap × 1

  • Useful trap. Generates board advantage. Fits great in the mix of other traps. As all the other traps add 1 charge to your Eaglehorn Bow

Animal Companion × 2

  • A really powerful spell that summons the random, but powerful beast. You may get one of 3 beasts:Misha, Huffer or LeokkThe drawback of this card is that you do not know what beast exactly you will summon. You may be pretty upset when summoning 2-4 Leokk while you need a 4-4 Misha taunt, or when you summon Misha in a situation when 4-2 hasty Huffer is needed to finish your opponent.

Kill Command × 2

  • While controlling a beast, kill command allows you to deal 5 damage to any opponent’s character, which is huge. You can use it to deal with the opponent’s creatures or simply keep two of those until opponent will be in the lethal range and finish him in 1 turn.

Unleash the Hounds × 2

  • Insanely powerful in aggro and midrange matchups, works well with Scavenging Hyena and [Hunter's Mark], still that’s not the card you want to keep in control matchups
Weapons - 2 +

Eaglehorn Bow × 2

  • Eaglehorn bow is a key card of the deck. In combination with all the traps this deck uses it can generate an absurd amount of damage

Card Replacements

  • [Ragnaros the Firelord] × 1 - In case you want to chose from free or common cards -  I would recommend you to put in [Stranglethorn Tiger]
  • [Savannah Highmane] - there is no replacement for this card
  • [Bloodfen Raptor] - I would highly recommend you to replace this cards with any card from the list : [King's Elekk], [Ironbeak Owl], [Haunted Creeper], [Huge Toad], [Knife Juggler], [Mad Scientist]. My own choice would be [Knife Juggler]
  • Traps.  You may always tweak your traps list depending on the meta

Tech Decisions

vs Aggro

  • -1 [Freezing Trap]   +1 [Explosive Trap]
  • -2 [Bloodfen Raptor]  +2 [River Crocolisk]
  • -1 [Ragnaros the Firelord]  +1 [Oasis Snapjaw]
  • -1 [Freezing Trap] +1 [Bear Trap]

vs Midrange

  • -1 [Explosive Trap]  +1 [Bear Trap]
  • -2 [Bloodfen Raptor] +2 [Knife Juggler]

vs Control

  • -1 [Explosive Trap] +1 [Loatheb]
  • -2 [Arcane Shot]  +2 [Jeweled Scarab]
  • -2 [Bloodfen Raptor]  +2 [Tomb Spider]

Mulligan Guide

Always try to build a good curve during Mulligans

vs Aggro - Always keep :

  • [Arcane Shot], [Explosive Trap], [Eaglehorn Bow], [Leper Gnome], [Bloodfen Raptor], [Dire Wolf Alpha], [Scavenging Hyena], [Unleash the Hounds]

Situational Keep (depends on your curve) :

  • [Kill Command], [Animal Companion]

Try to avoid keeping cards with mana cost 4 and higher in your starting hand.

vs Midrange - Always keep :

  • [Eaglehorn Bow], [Leper Gnome], [Bloodfen Raptor], [Animal Companion], [Dire Wolf Alpha], [Scavenging Hyena]

You may keep [Houndmaster] in case you have 2 more low curve beasts in your hand

vs Control - Avoid Keeping:

  • [Arcane Shot] ×2, [Explosive Trap] ×1, [Kill Command] ×2, [Unleash the Hounds] ×2, [Ragnaros the Firelord] ×1

And try to build up the perfect curve. In Control matchup is better to have [Savannah Highmane] in your starting hand then [Arcane Shot] as you know that you will be able to get advantage of it on the turn 6
